Reports indicate the bodaboda rider – Daniel Mburu had rescued a young girl who reportedly was drowning in Korogocho river. On rescuing the girl, Mburu immediately took his motorbike and rushed her to the nearby Mama Lucy facility to save her life. On arrival at Mama Lucy gate, a scuffle ensued, Mburu forced his entry into the facility to save the child’s life as he saw it an emergency. Lucky enough, he managed to find his way at the Accident and Emergency centre, where he handed over the young girl to the medics as an emergency case. To him, he had saved life.
When Mburu was coming back from the Emergency centre, he realized his motorcycle was missing. He went fourth and questioned the security at the facility who were in the company of two AP officers on his motorbike whereabouts. When he questioned the officers on why they had confiscated his motorcycle, there was exchange of words which led to a commotion. Witnesses told us. In the whole fracas, the AP officer who was having his rifle – an AK 47, shot the young man into the chest dead.
Immediately the body was taken in to Mama Lucy Morgue. The gun sound had send an alarm to youths who were around, on noticing the scene, they forced their entry into Mama Lucy alongside demonstrators demanding answers and arrest of the officer for the offence.
At this moment, GSU officers were called upon to calm the situation. They came with force and used tear gas to scare the demonstrators away. In the whole mix up, injuries were reported.
It took more than two hours to contain the situation. But at the end of all this, Mburu had saved life and he was dead. His family, had just lost a father, a son and a loved one
The incident comes barely few hours after IPOA had released its statistics in the increased cases of extra judicial killings, whereby those mandated to protect life have become a threat to life itself. In all this, Kenyans are asking if the police reforms were just a document.
The officer has not been arrested and the young girl is under medication at the same facility as the body of Mburu is moved to City Morgue. Investigation into the murder has commenced
