A 33-year-old Nigerian rapper has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a woman in February 2017. According to the BBC, the musician – Olawale Hassan alias Goldie 1 and based in Falcon Avenue, Grays, Essex – preyed on the victim, who was in her 20s, at a social event in Southend – a large coastal town, east of the United Kingdom (UK).
The woman who was in the company of a friend is said to have turned down his advances severally to accompany him to his hotel room. He eventually lured her out at the closing time with the promise of driving her home safely after her friend left.
The rapper instead drove her to a car park along the Western Esplanade where he locked the car’s doors, overpowered and repeatedly raped her, ignoring all her requests for him to stop. He was arrested a few days later and charged with three counts of rape and one charge of assault by penetration.
He denied the accusations but was found guilty of all charges at Basildon Crown Court and, aside from the 10-year prison sentence, “banned from driving for eight years and nine months, put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and given an indefinite restraining order,” reported Essex Live.
According to the case’s investigating officer Victoria De’ath, the victim’s action to press charges against the rapper took courage. “Firstly, I would like to thank the victim for her courage in reporting this incident.
She blamed herself for getting in Hassan’s car, but has now recognised just how dangerous this man is and that none of this is her fault.
She didn’t want him to hurt anyone else and this has been her motivation for three-and-a-half years – to do what she can to keep other people in her community safe… I hope that today’s result brings some comfort to this courageous and inspirational woman who is now rebuilding her life knowing that Hassan is safely behind bars,” said De’ath.
