Controversial Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has recently sparked discussions among netizens after vowing to marry multiple women, stating that he has the financial means to take care of them. Through his Instagram page, Salasya announced his intentions to potentially marry more than two wives, citing the current cold weather as a factor that has made him consider taking this step.In his post, Salasya mentioned that the cold weather has prompted him to think about marrying one wife this year and another the following year. He confidently stated that he has the financial resources to support multiple wives, claiming that the money he has is sufficient to protect and maintain them. This declaration has raised eyebrows and stirred controversy, especially in a society where monogamy is the norm.Salasya’s announcement comes on the heels of former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya’s public introduction of his third wife, Mary Biketi, confirming his polygamous status. Additionally, Kakamega Senator Bony Khalwale, who hails from the same Luhya community as Salasya, has openly admitted to being a polygamist with four wives, although one of them has passed away.
The practice of polygamy is deeply rooted in Luhya culture, which is comparable to many other Bantu cultural traditions. While polygamy was more common in the past, its prevalence has decreased over time, particularly with the influence of Christianity. Today, only a few individuals, typically those with significant financial means, continue to practice polygamy.Salasya’s decision to publicly declare his intention to marry multiple women has raised questions about whether he is following in the footsteps of his fellow Luhya politicians. The late Martin Shikuku, who previously represented Mumias East, was also known to be openly polygamous, having married four wives, three of whom succumbed to cancer. As society evolves and cultural norms shift, the practice of polygamy remains a topic of debate and controversy. While some view it as a traditional and acceptable practice, others criticize it as outdated and patriarchal. Ultimately, the decision to engage in polygamy is a personal one, influenced by cultural, religious, and individual beliefs.Only time will tell if Peter Salasya will indeed proceed with his plans to marry multiple women and whether he will be able to navigate the challenges and responsibilities that come with such a decision. As discussions continue to unfold online and in the public sphere, the topic of polygamy in modern society remains a complex and contentious issue.
