The boat, which was ferrying church members from Kambi Samaki to Kokwa Island, capsized for reasons that are yet to be determined. In December 2023, five individuals lost their lives in a similar incident at Aneko Beach in Migori County, Lake Victoria. High tides caused the boat to lose control and capsize, leading to a tragic outcome.
In another heartbreaking incident in October 2023, five pupils from Arap Moi Primary School in Uasin Gishu perished in a boat accident at an amusement park in Eldoret. The students, who were on a school trip, boarded a boat on a man-made lake that tragically capsized.
According to the authoritties, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when using water as a means of transport. Adding that the Kenya Maritime Authority has consistently urged Kenyans and tourists to exercise caution when visiting water bodies and to prioritize safety at all times.
