Days after the burial of the late Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has made a fervent call for the modernisation of military and police aircraft, including Ruto’s Private Jet.
In a passionate speech on the floor of the National Assembly, Ichung’wah criticised Members of Parliament who question allocations to the military without understanding the need for modernisation. He emphasized the importance of upgrading all military equipment, particularly aircraft used by the armed forces and law enforcement agencies, including Ruto’s Private Jet.

The presidential plane, known as Harambee One, is a Fokker 70 Extended Range (ER) aircraft that has been in service since 1995. Originally manufactured in the Netherlands, the aircraft was modified to enhance its capabilities, reducing passenger capacity while extending its range. The decision to procure a dedicated presidential jet was driven by cost-effectiveness and operational convenience for official travel.
With undisclosed security features tailored for Heads of State transport, the interior details and security arrangements of the aircraft remain confidential for national security reasons. Operated by the Kenya Air Force, the aircraft is valued at approximately Ksh2 billion.
Ichung’wah’s call for modernisation is timely, given Kenya’s modest fleet of around 80 aircraft. Upgrading military and police equipment is crucial to prevent tragedies like the recent plane crash that claimed the lives of General Ogolla and nine other military officers.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula echoed the need for peace and unity, urging leaders to work together to foster peace in the region. He emphasized the importance of leadership starting from the House and suggested amending laws to allocate funds for security issues.
As MPs eulogised General Ogolla and the other officers who lost their lives, the call for modernisation and peace resonated throughout the National Assembly. It is imperative that steps are taken to upgrade military and police equipment to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
