President William Ruto has been on a diplomatic mission to intensify campaigns for Kenya’s African Union Commission chairperson candidate, Raila Odinga. During his recent tour to China, Ruto met with at least six African presidents in a single day to garner support for Raila’s bid for the AUC job.
Among the African presidents that Ruto and Raila met in Beijing were Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Sissoco, Asimi Goita of Mali, Faure Essozimna of Togo, Mahamat Idriss of Chad, and Zambia’s Hakainde Hichilema. These meetings were crucial in deepening relations between Kenya and these African nations, as well as in garnering support for Raila’s AUC candidacy.
Kenya has been actively campaigning for Raila’s bid for the AUC job, with strategic efforts being made to secure support from African leaders. The launch of Raila’s candidacy in Nairobi was attended by several East African Community heads of state and other top officials from the region, showcasing the strong backing that Raila has from the East African nations.
The AU Commission chairperson position is a prestigious one that elevates the holder to a near head of state status. Raila’s vision for the African continent and his focus on infrastructure development will be highlighted during the China Africa summit, where he will have the opportunity to engage with various leaders and share his plans for Africa within the context of the Belt and Road initiative.
In the upcoming February 2025 election, Raila will face stiff competition from Djibouti Foreign Affairs Minister Mahmoud Youssouf, as well as candidates from Mauritius and Madagascar. However, with the strong support from Kenya and other African nations, Raila’s chances of securing the AUC chairperson position are looking promising.
