Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi has officially announced his intention to run for the Nairobi governor seat in the upcoming 2027 elections. This decision comes after he was asked to step down from running for the same position in the last general election due to a coalition arrangement between ODM and the Jubilee party.
During a speech on Tuesday, Wanyonyi expressed his determination to pursue the governorship this time around, stating that he will not back down regardless of any coalition agreements that may arise. He recalled how he had initially launched his campaign for the governor of Nairobi position in a church, where he received the endorsement and blessings of the pastors. However, he was later asked to vie for the MP seat instead due to the coalition dynamics.
“Last time, I was running for the governor of Nairobi position and I launched my campaign in this church. I remember we talked about my candidature with the pastors and they endorsed and blessed me to go ahead and campaign,” he said.
In the 2022 elections, Tim Wanyonyi agreed not to run for the governor seat as his party leader Raila Odinga had been cleared to run for president under the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance. As a result, the alliance supported Polycarp Igathe for the governorship, who ultimately lost to the current governor Johnson Sakaja of UDA.
Despite not contesting for the governor seat in the last election, Wanyonyi successfully retained his Westlands MP seat on the ODM ticket, garnering a significant number of votes. He has a strong political background, having been first elected as a councillor in the Nairobi City Council in 2007, and later serving as the Westlands MP in the 2013, 2017, and 2022 elections.
Wanyonyi, who is the younger brother of Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, expressed gratitude to the people of Westlands for reelecting him and reaffirmed his commitment to serving them. He emphasized that his reelection was a testament to the confidence that the electorate has in his leadership.
As Wanyonyi gears up for the 2027 elections, many Nairobi residents believe that his decision to run for the Nairobi governor seat signals his determination to take on new challenges and contribute to the development of the county. With other claim that his experience and track record in public service, his candidacy is likely to be closely watched as the political landscape in Nairobi continues to evolve.
