Several people were injured and property of an unknown value was destroyed on Thursday at an event attended by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga. The incident occurred after clashes erupted between two rival political groups of youths, who were attending the event. The fight broke out when one group of youth attempted to block another group of mechanics from accessing the event.
According to witnesses, the wrangles started immediately after Governor Wanga concluded her speech. The youth involved in the altercation began pelting stones and wooden clubs at each other, resulting in damage to nearby buildings and vehicles.
Governor Wanga had attended the event to address the concerns of mechanics who had been complaining about their poor working conditions and overall welfare. She emphasized the importance of creating a better business environment for all informal sector groups during her speech.
Police in Homa bay, who were on high alert, quickly arrived at the scene to control the situation. Residents fled to safety as the altercation escalated. In an attempt to stop the fight, the officers fired shots in the air, causing a temporary halt to the event as the opposing groups turned against the police.
This incident is not the first of its kind in the region. In a similar situation in May, clashes broke out between two groups aligned with different political figures, resulting in injuries to two individuals, including a nine-year-old boy.
Governor Wanga’s counterpart, Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko, condemned the violence and accused Uriri Member of Parliament Mark Nyamita of instigating the unrest in his constituency. Ayacko emphasized the need for peaceful politics and criticized those who resort to violence to achieve their goals.
