Kimilili Member of Parliament (MP) Didmus Barasa has expressed his desire for the Kenya Kwanza government to dominate Kenya’s politics for the next 50 years. He envisions a scenario where the President William Ruto-led coalition maintains its grip on power similar to the long-standing rule of South Africa’s African National Congress and Tanzania’s Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

Didmus Barasa believes that after President Ruto’s expected 10-year rule, all his successors should come from Kenya Kwanza. He suggests that this can be achieved by ensuring that future presidents build on the progress made by Ruto during his tenure. This vision aligns with the aspirations of Kenya Kwanza, which came into power during the 2022 General Election and has hinted at potential changes to the constitutional provisions regarding presidential term limits.
Last year, Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei proposed extending the presidential term limit from five to seven years, arguing that the current limit is insufficient for a President to deliver on their mandate and promises to the people. However, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), to which Cherargei belongs, distanced itself from his views, calling them superfluous and peripheral.
Similarly, Fafi MP Salah Yakub suggested scrapping the two-term presidential limit and setting an age limit of 75 for contesting the presidency. He argued that limiting presidents to two terms denies performing leaders the opportunity to further develop the nation.
While these proposals have sparked debate within the political sphere, it remains to be seen whether they will gain traction and lead to changes in the country’s political landscape. As Kenya Kwanza seeks to establish itself as a dominant force in Kenyan politics, the coming years will be crucial in determining the direction of the nation’s governance.
